Homemade Coffee & Coconut Oil Body Scrub

Wednesday 15 July 2015

I'm sure lots of you have heard of Frank's Coffee Scrub, a miracle worker which boasts treating certain beauty 'flaws' such as stretch marks and acne. As a somewhat broke student I find it difficult to fork out €20 euro or more (at least not until I get a job) ...for a product that might not work.

Whether you want to treat acne, stretchmarks and cellulite.. or not, we all love a little pamper session. In my opinion a coffee scrub is a perfect way to do so because I find it quite relaxing and because of the many skin benefiting ingredients it contains! So what could be better than a homemade scrub, made using recycled coffee grinds, coconut oil and salt.

Coffee is great for your skin (when not ingested in this case)for many reasons:
1. When applied to skin the caffeine in coffee restricts the blood vessels - this reduces puffiness.
2. Using old coffee grinds is super because of their rough texture and they act as an exfoliator - this removes dead skin cells and gives soft skin.
3. Coffee is a diuretic (it removes water from the body) and helps get rid of cellulite when applied to affected areas.
4. Coffee brightens skin.
It is also known to stimulate hair growth... and since I'm using this scrub on my legs that doesn't sound great. However, I really suffer from ingrown hairs so I'm hoping that the coffee will help stimulate healthy hair growth... in the right direction rather than under the skin.

Coconut oil acts as a moisturiser with many of its own benefits.
It's nice because before use it's a solid, and once in your hands it begins to melt.

Sea salt has been added because of its antiseptic properties, so the scrub both cleans and cleanses.

Homemade Coffee Grinds and Coconut Oil Body Scrub.

  • 1 cup of used coffee grinds (everything is better when it can be used twice)
  • 6 tbsp coconut oil
  • 3 tbsp coarse sea salt

To a bowl, add the coffee grinds and salt.
Place 6 tablespoons of coconut oil in a separate bowl and place in a microwave for 30 seconds.
Then stir the coconut oil until all has melted, from a thick white lard consistency, to a clear oil.
Add this oil to the coffee and salt.
Mix until combined.
Transfer to a clean jar with a lid (e.g. a mason jar or a clean glass food jar).
Keep for up to 2 months (if it lasts that long because mine certainly won't!)

  1. I love using homemade products so this sounds great!
Much better than paying way too much for a small pot :)
